Central Texas is heading into winter under an active El Niño Advisory from NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center. In its October 8, 2026 discussion, CPC said El Niño continues to strengthen, with a strong-to-very strong El Niño likely through January–March 2027 (greater than an 83% chance). CPC also notes that with an event of this size, the chances of seeing typical El Niño impacts are larger — though not guaranteed.
For homeowners in New Braunfels, San Antonio, San Marcos, and the surrounding communities, that usually means planning for a wetter-than-average pattern, not waiting for the first roof-to-foundation waterfall. Seasonal outlooks are about odds, not a promise of any one storm. Still, the smart move is the same every year: make sure your gutters and downspouts can keep up when the rain does arrive.
Lessard’s Rain Gutters has been in business since 1979 and has been installing gutters in New Braunfels for about 20 years. Here’s a practical checklist we walk through with homeowners before a wet winter.
A gutter system only works if water can enter the trough, move to the outlet, and leave through the downspout. Leaves, seed pods, pine needles, and shingle grit shrink that path. When a fast Central Texas rain hits, water has nowhere to go but over the front edge — onto fascia, brick, landscaping, and the ground next to your slab.
Overflow is more than a mess. It saturates soil beside the foundation, stains siding, and can push water toward doors and windows. If you already see tiger striping on the face of the gutter, damp corners after storms, or mulch washed away from downspouts, treat that as an early warning — not something to “watch until spring.”
Before the wettest stretch of winter, clean the full run: trough, outlets, elbows, and the first few feet of each downspout. Then look at the system in daylight:
A short free inspection is often enough to separate “needs cleaning” from “needs repair or a larger system.” If you want us to look, request a free estimate and we’ll walk the roof edge with you.
Many older homes still run on undersized downspouts or long gutter stretches with too few outlets. When rain rates jump, the trough fills faster than the outlets can empty it — even if the gutters look “fine” on a light day.
On larger roofs, steeper pitches, and long unbroken runs, we often recommend more outlets, larger downspouts, or both. The goal is simple: move water off the roof and away from the house without overflowing the front edge.
Standing-seam and other metal roofs shed water quickly. That is great for the roof and hard on a small gutter. If you have a metal roof — or a large asphalt roof feeding one corner — a standard 5-inch system may not be enough. Many Central Texas homes do better with seamless gutters in a higher-capacity profile, including 6-inch K-style. Lessards owns a 7-inch K-style machine for high-capacity runs when a job needs that much volume.
Right-sizing the gutter is cheaper than paying for fascia repairs, landscape washouts, or repeat emergency cleanings every time a front rolls through.
Leaf protection will not fix a gutter that is the wrong size or pitched the wrong way. Used the right way, though, quality guards cut how often you climb a ladder during oak and pecan season. We install systems such as Gutter Glove, which carries a lifetime manufacturer warranty, as part of our leaf protection options.
Guards still need an occasional check. After big wind events, walk the yard and look for sections that lifted, pooled water, or collected a mat of wet leaves on top. Clearing the surface is a lot easier than digging years of compost out of an open trough.
If you want a second set of eyes before winter sets in, Lessard’s Rain Gutters offers free estimates. We serve New Braunfels, San Antonio, San Marcos, and nearby communities from our local offices:
All of those numbers are answered live during business hours. We also offer discounts for military, first responders, and teachers. Call the office closest to you, or send a note through our contact page, and we’ll help you get ahead of the rain — not chase it.
